Blog 9 The one with lyrics

I Believe by Stevie Wonder

Shattered dreams, worthless years,
Here am I encased inside a hollow shell,
Life began, then was done,
Now I stare into a cold and empty well.

The many sounds that meet our ears, the sights our eyes behold,
Will open up our merging hearts,
And feed our empty souls.

I believe when I fall in love with you it will be forever,
I believe when I fall in love this time it will be forever.

I think these lyrics are very interesting, that is they make certain assumptions. Beyond the obvious assumption that a concept of love exists there is the assumption that falling in love, at least not in this situation, is instantaneous. Saying that “I believe when I fall in love with you it will be forever…” to me signifies that the singer believes he will fall in love, but isn’t in love yet which is interesting because you want to know why he thinks this way.

Without despair we will share,
And the joys of caring will not be replaced,
What has been must never end
And with the strength we have wont be erased,
When the truths of love are planted firm,
They wont be hard to find,
And the words of love I speak to you will echo in your mind.

I believe when I fall in love with you it will be forever,
I believe when I fall in love this time it will be forever.

I believe when I fall in love with you it will be forever,
I believe when I fall in love with you it will be forever.

Again, we can look at this line and look at the meaning of “…this time it will be forever.” This seems to suggest that he has been in love before, but fell out of it and makes me wonder if the other times was love. The opening supports this with very depressing words, that suggests that losing love is like losing life.

I’m so glad that I found someone to believe in again,
I’m so glad that I found someone to believe in again.

God surely answered my prayer,
God surely answered by prayer,
You know God surely answered my prayer,
You know God surely answered my prayer,
God always will answer your prayers,
Believe in one who will answer my prayer,
Thank you god.

Come on, lets fall in love,
You’re the woman I’ve been waiting for,
Come on, lets fall in love,
You’re the girl that I really adore,
Come on, lets fall in love... etc.

At this point it seems to perhaps cheapen the whole song, as it sounds more like a song of trying to convince a girl instead of a song admitting of love or such. Let’s fall in love seems somewhat like begging.

bogg 8 the one with all the slides

The presentations were something more or less foreign to me. That is to say it showed a little bit more of the personal or inner workings of many type of people I have not really inter worked with since high school. I mean this with no disrespect, just that many of the thoughts are something I would not naturally have.
Technically all the presentations were very well done and illustrate just how much everyone knows this technology. I really hope I do not have to do another one of these in another class, yet I know I will have to. It seems that a multitude of teachers think this is cutting edge, and while it is important, these seem to prove to me that most know how to work with the system.
I have to say that they were rough on the information front, mostly because this was a short non-research assignment. Many of the aspects and concepts alluded to by the presenters were simply not brought forward in entirety or with correct application. This would be a bigger deal in my opinion if the class was on these concepts. I thought on a whole the class was very respectful of each other and gave effort to show a bit of what they liked and knew in the ads they picked. With the exception of myself perhaps who just basically picked an ad for familiarity with the goals of the project given.

Wiki Blog 7

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alaskan_Purchase

The Alaskan purchase is a funny story that is told very differently depending on college US history courses and their high school counter parts. The article on Wikipedia is short and tells the usually pieces of information. When it happened, who was responsible, for how much, and how it was looked at when it first happened.
This is highly accurate in what is included, but very much inaccurate as a whole for what wasn’t included. Wikipedia makes no effort to give the story leading to the deal, nor the discovery of gold that reversed the notion of the transaction being a “folly.”

What isn’t spoken of is how the Civil War a few years earlier was causing Britain great financial trouble. Textile industries decimated by the blockade of southern ports by the US navy demanded British intervention. Finally the British sent armies via boat to Canada to prepare for an invasion. The Russians who hated the Brits knew this could happen, so they sent hundreds of thousands of troops to New York to have a parade and declare their support for the United States. This effectively ended the invasion and the troops were left in Ottawa.

Angry the British decided to send the troops across Canada to seize Alaska, for the Canadians discovered gold in the streams coming from Alaska. The US spies learned of the British plot to take the gold rich lands. With the Civil War over, they decided to “thank” Russia for their show of support by offering them a deal for Alaska. With the intelligence that Britain was going to declare war and the lands would be lost, they jumped at the deal. The deal was considered horrible for America, until gold was “discovered” shortly after by a government sponsored expedition to Alaska.

America likes to romanticize our ethics with pride, but we thank an act of alliance by effectively stealing under false pretenses. Cheat once, lie twice is what we did. Hoorah American revisionist history! Wiki has none of this info, most likely because it is too controversial to say anything anti American.

Mondays predictions for the Deadline.

Predictions as of Monday.

Brian Burke will continue to say stupid shit.

Besides that

The Wings should land Prospal, and I think some other Defenseman no one will see coming. I think Staios would be great, but more likely someone who is going to be a 7th or even 8th defensemen.
Blake will not move, but maybe he is moved to the Wings.... San Jose is talked as is Anaheim, neither makes sense. I want him if we dont make a bigger deal for Staios.
Tampa will move Richards, I am calling the blockbuster, him for Hossa. Perhaps even a three team or more trade? Tampa will also aquire Al Montoya.
Camaleri is going to be moved, for futures to the highest bidder.
Tanguay is going to Montreal. Ryder prob on his way out.
Olli is going to Edmonton, not!
Vancouver will get him.
I tell you Malik is getting moved as is Sydor I kinda think Malik is going to San Jose and Marleau is going east, Ottawa would prob make that move as they are making bad moves lately.

Blog 6 advertising.

I have a thing for brunettes, true story, although I am not really sure why I just find them far more alluring. I noticed something of the course of the last half decade that pleased me greatly; brunettes are the new hair color of choice. Really, it is darker hair in general but when you consider how long blonde was considered the hair color of choice for women to the point hair coloring became a huge industry this is quite the development. I know this change is occurring because every facet of media is making the switch, especially the yardstick of our capitalist culture, the commercial.
While the normal tactics once were to put a bombshell blonde in sexy garb, utilizing a product, visiting a place, or generally existing in perfect bliss due to something that can be acquired for greenback. Now the tactic seems to be to put a beautiful brunette basking in the delight of a person, place, or thing brought to you by the life style that can only be obtained with the capitalist goods offered at your local place of business. I think it is because it is somehow more believable, that perhaps they are not making women feel inferior for not being born to some ideal and instead appeal to the average woman. At least that is the feeling I get from seeing slightly more normal looking women in commercials. The commercial that encapsulates this is a line of hair dye commercials where famous celebrities, many of which were once blondes, are promoting darker hair dyes. True they have auburn and black too, but the blonde seems auspiciously absent. Perhaps this is a paradigm shift, most likely some psychologist/marketing team somewhere after an expensive research/think session determined it would move more cars.

I also like to point out that Word prefers I use the more PC, brown-haired women and blonde-haired women instead of Brunettes and Blondes. This is somehow funny to me.

Blog 5 Sample

Public Spaces seem to be really about appealing to the senses of the aforementioned public. Conveying to the senses the type of message the builders want to convey. In The Truman Show, the public spaces are designed for a TV audience as well as to contain and convince him of its authenticity. At Ford Field, the home stadium for the Detroit Lions, the public is the hometown Detroit fans. The message is pride, even if the team does not convey that same message.

Blog 4 pop culture thingy

I brought in the book “Sex, drugs, and Cocoa Puffs” by Chuck Klosterman. This book is actually called a low culture manifesto by the author and critiqued as pop culture analysis. Therefore, I thought to bring in this for my piece of pop culture for the obvious reasons. This book is a very good read even though it is rather episodic in form with each chapter having nothing to do with another.
Chuck himself is a writer for a variety of music magazines, most commonly SPIN magazine. I do not consider myself in his vein of character, as I do not follow music closely enough to be an expert. This book however is more about other forms of pop culture and therefore quite enjoyable for most people I believe. Some topics include serial killers, The Sims, breakfast cereal, and of course porn. All of these topics, despite how they sound are actually done with tact and insight inconsistent with what you would expect in the most delightful manner.
My favorite section of the book is one where he puts forth a very bold proclamation about the very nature of the effect of pop culture. He claims that many people decide to imitate the personalities of characters on shows, in particular the reality show The Real World. I never would have accepted his hypothesis of pop culture archetypes if I did not read this book and listen to his impressive line of thought. He suggests that the first season was the only real one and ever since all reality, programming has people who fill the “roles” made in that first season. I hate reality TV, but can see how the copycat nature of TV would allow for this, and I can even see some fools acting the part in their lives. I suggest you read it for your own impressions.

English experience.

I know that I am not a quality writer by any serious measurement. Whenever I come across an “English type” my papers are torn apart in such a manner that would make John Wayne Gacy get squeamish. However when I am put up against any other academic discipline, I fare quite all right. I have generally accomplished satisfactory marks on all of my papers throughout my younger years. I really only took one non-required English class in high school and it was creative writing. Nothing I did was impressive or fun enough to outweigh the work so I did not seek out any English class since and that was about 7 years ago.
In that time, however I did take the advance placement United States History and managed to construct an essay to earn me a top score and college credit in the matter of a long test period. Ever since then I have not feared working on a paper. I just lamented the work. In a contemporary sense, I just managed to ace a class with the most college-level papers I ever had to do and was quite surprised on how well the paper had been received by the professor. Perhaps it has more to do with my historical sense then my English skills but I will take the A all the same.
I keep dreaming that maybe I will write something wonderful and can invoke the responses I gather from various media. I never complete anything, as it seems too difficult to work with English. So instead, I just write little blurbs via instant messenger or on a myspace page trying to illustrate my wit and deeper values. After I finish my required English classes, I will avoid writing except for the more colloquial sense.

What I expect

As I pour over the SF writer and The Word is a text in the context of what to expect to get from this class I can only shake my head. The books seem to be a long list of a variety of rules. I read many things in English exclusively and there seems to no real unifying theme to the written language anymore. It seems to me that there is a wild difference between what kind of writing you need or can use. Everyone has some sort of rules and they all differ just enough for someone to have issue with it. I hope to learn all the rules and never make a mistake with a rather complex language. I then can use it to change the world. Then I will stop using sarcasm. Honestly I think, as a student who has been in school for 20 years, my English with the aid of Word is sufficient for any endeavor I need, provided the minor imperfections are overlooked. I will gather the credit needed and continue to attempt to use my writing to the best of my abilities for what I need of it, from situation to situation. Of course, if I can gather any insight to improve my writing I will try to remember it longer then some other lessons I have learned in my time. I will continue to put my faith in common sense and my academic abilities and gather what I can as I pass this required course. Once again, it is more important to get that credit and the paper then it is to actually learn anything. I however already did learn another way to set up a blog, which should allow me to bore more people with my tales of taking up space.

About me thing

Three words that describe me would be loyalty, ethics, and consistency. I hate anyone who believes in these words, "Each man for himself, and the Devil take the hindmost." Guess what, that is you America.

I would like to meet anyone worth knowing and anyone who lives every week like its Shark Week, whatever that means. I would like to know more about other people outside the folks I come across.

I like stuff and things, mostly doing stuff and owning things respectively. I watch a lot of TV, mostly comedy and sports. I am a big fan of the Detroit Red Wings and they are definitely my favorite form of entertainment. I like good music. Yeah. My favorite bands are Sufjan Stevens, 311, Beatles, Beck. At least I have the most CD’s of those artists. My Ipod has like 4000 songs on it and a lot of variety.

Movies are my favorite thing. The Best movie of all time is The Shawshank Redemption, in at least a technical sense and any argument against its superior quality is mute and not opinion but fact, however this is not my favorite movie, which is a matter of opinion. My Favorite movies of all time are; The Back to the Future Trilogy, High Fidelity, Rushmore, The Original Poseidon Adventure, Ghostbusters, The Pink Submarine (I promise you not gay slang but an older movie), TMNT, The Shawshank Redemption, Evil Dead 2, Army of Darkness, The Sting, Demolition Man, Fight Club. The Best movies I have seen in the last couple of years, Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, I heart Huckabees, Batman Begins, and Lost in Translation.

I read books, but not all that often and they are mostly very well known books. I would say my favorite is Animal Farm, or Sex, Drugs, and Coco Puffs.

I could have said things that are more abstract about who I am. Yet it is a material superficial world and well those things give you a feeling about who I am.

hi

Do I get credit for this?
