Blog 9 The one with lyrics

I Believe by Stevie Wonder

Shattered dreams, worthless years,
Here am I encased inside a hollow shell,
Life began, then was done,
Now I stare into a cold and empty well.

The many sounds that meet our ears, the sights our eyes behold,
Will open up our merging hearts,
And feed our empty souls.

I believe when I fall in love with you it will be forever,
I believe when I fall in love this time it will be forever.

I think these lyrics are very interesting, that is they make certain assumptions. Beyond the obvious assumption that a concept of love exists there is the assumption that falling in love, at least not in this situation, is instantaneous. Saying that “I believe when I fall in love with you it will be forever…” to me signifies that the singer believes he will fall in love, but isn’t in love yet which is interesting because you want to know why he thinks this way.

Without despair we will share,
And the joys of caring will not be replaced,
What has been must never end
And with the strength we have wont be erased,
When the truths of love are planted firm,
They wont be hard to find,
And the words of love I speak to you will echo in your mind.

I believe when I fall in love with you it will be forever,
I believe when I fall in love this time it will be forever.

I believe when I fall in love with you it will be forever,
I believe when I fall in love with you it will be forever.

Again, we can look at this line and look at the meaning of “…this time it will be forever.” This seems to suggest that he has been in love before, but fell out of it and makes me wonder if the other times was love. The opening supports this with very depressing words, that suggests that losing love is like losing life.

I’m so glad that I found someone to believe in again,
I’m so glad that I found someone to believe in again.

God surely answered my prayer,
God surely answered by prayer,
You know God surely answered my prayer,
You know God surely answered my prayer,
God always will answer your prayers,
Believe in one who will answer my prayer,
Thank you god.

Come on, lets fall in love,
You’re the woman I’ve been waiting for,
Come on, lets fall in love,
You’re the girl that I really adore,
Come on, lets fall in love... etc.

At this point it seems to perhaps cheapen the whole song, as it sounds more like a song of trying to convince a girl instead of a song admitting of love or such. Let’s fall in love seems somewhat like begging.

I agree that the concept of love has a deeper meaning in tis song. Also the use of the line "lets fall in love" does somewhat make the cheapen the song in a way. In the beginning of the song he used love to talk about how he just wants to be in love and to not lose it. But at the end like you said it seems he uses the concept of love to get the girl.

Love songs are one of my favorite types of songs. They always make you feel so warm inside. They also make you wonder if love could really be this great. It make even the most independent people want to experience love because something that strong must be worth fighting for.

It true there are a lot of songs written about love and all of them are true but this one is and it has a deeper felling that what is said in the lyrics if a person takes their time they can understand it.

I absolutely love Stevie Wonder! His voice is beautiful and his songs always have so much meaning in them. On top of that it seems like the fact that he is blind did not stop him from pursuing such a successful career. Thats very inspirational!
